I want to bring attention to the fact that, from what I’ve been told, Maine has only one facility for homeless veterans. The facility is located in Augusta and houses only 12. How can that be? Mainers are known for having great empathy and respect for those who have served our country. These Vets hope to have adequate housing one day, but now are getting by in less than adequate circumstances. Meaning, the men need personal supplies and good sleeping arrangements and storage areas for their clothing and personal effects, such as bureaus, etc. Most likely anything anyone can donate would be much appreciated. However, what seems to be most needed is other facilities throughout the state where men can be safe and secure while waiting for more permanent addresses. We must all join forces and see what can be done. It can happen. Let’s begin.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
