AUGUSTA — Allison Melcher had a double-double, and Lindsey Cornelison returned from injury as the Mt. Ararat High School girls basketball team downed Cony, 53-27, in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference game on Wednesday.
Melcher had 14 points and 19 rebounds, Sara Lamb chipped in 11 points and Cornelison had 11 points and eight boards in her first game action in nearly two months.
Down 15-13 after a quarter, the Eagles came alive on the defensive end, holding the Rams to just two points and taking a 21-17 halftime lead. A 12-4 third quarter put Mt. Ararat in firm control.
“The girls stepped it up after a lethargic start and played much better in the second half,” said Mt. Ararat coach Andy Morris, whose Eagles are scheduled to visit Bangor on Friday at 7 p.m.
Mt. Ararat held a 41-28 rebounding edge. Lamb also dished out three assists, while Lauren Sturgess and Taylor Wienckowski each picked up two steals.
Haley Ward and Cari Hopkins paced Cony (1-13) with six points apiece.
At the free-throw line, Mt. Ararat finished 18-of-30 and Cony 9-of-19.

Jackson Lesure had a game-high 23 points in a Western Maine Conference win over Freeport at Bridgton.
Lake Region (11-4) held quarter leads of 15-8, 48-20 and 63-35. Marcus DeVoe added 18 points in the win.
Jack Davenport had a solid game for Freeport, finishing with 19 points. Brendan Qualls had nine points.
The Falcons (0-15) host Falmouth tonight at 7 p.m.

The visiting Lakers started strong in a WMC win over Freeport, which fell to 1-14 and visits Falmouth on Friday at 7 p.m.
Lake Region darted out to a 21-10 lead after a quarter and led 33-19 at the half.
The Falcons outscored the Lakers, 23-21 in the second half.
Lauren Jacobs had a game-high 16 points for Lake Region, with Sarah Hancock adding 13 and Kristen Huntress nine.
Taylor Rinaldi and Megan Cormier both had eight points to lead Freeport, with Regan Lynch chipping in seven.
At the foul line, Freeport finished 4-of-7 and Lake Region 8-of-19.
