AUGUSTA (AP) — Police say a New Hampshire man was killed after he was struck by a van while walking along state Route 3 in Augusta.
The Kennebec Journal reports 24-year-old James Demeritt was hit by the van around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Bolton Hill and Cross Hill roads.
Lt. Chris Read says Demeritt was wearing dark clothing and walking down the middle of the road at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
Read says charges are not expected to be filed against the 55-year-old motorist, who was unable to see Demeritt. The crash, however, remains under investigation by Augusta police and Maine State Police.
It’s unclear whether Demeritt was staying in Maine or just visiting.
