FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT SEASON, Brunswick Soccer Club’s U12 Girls have clinched the State Championship title. The Dragons competed in the Maine State Premier League this spring. They finished the regular season as the second seed, then with wins over Velocity Premier, Southern Maine Phoenix Premier and Maine Coast United, advanced to the state finals against Central Maine United. The two teams met in Waterville on June 12. The game was evenly matched in the first half with very windy conditions resulting in 0- 0 at halftime deadlock. CMU came out strong in the second half and went on the attack. The defensive line answered and goalie Ophelia Ladner had some great saves before CMU was finally able to punch one through to lead Brunswick 1-0. Late in the second half, defensive back Logan Brown came up big out of the midfield to float a ball over the goalie’s head to tie it up at 1-1. With no time left in the second half, Brunswick was called for a hand ball inside the 18, resulting in a PK for CMU. Time expired as CMU missed the shot and sent the teams into overtime. Still tied after two overtime periods, Brunswick outscored CMU 3-2 in penalty kicks for the win. Ten Brunswick teams will compete in the Summer Coastal Challenge this weekend in Brunswick.
