THREE St. John’s School students earned the right to represent the school April 24 during the regional round of the Modern Woodmen of America’s annual Civic Oration competition. Each year, a topic is given and students write a three- to five-minute speech on the pre-selected topic. This year’s topic was “Volunteerism in America” and St. John’s students talked about everything from Civil War nurses to hurricanes and tsunamis to the Red Cross and 9/11. The contest begins at the classroom level which results in 12 school-wide winners. From there, the 12 compete to determine the top three who will compete in the regional contest. The next two levels, where students must then memorize their speeches, are the state and national competitions. St. John’s top three winners — Abby L’Abbe, Annie McManus and Joseph Beale — spoke about 9/11, Habitat for Humanity and the Ronald McDonald House. They will compete on April 24 at St. Dominic’s Academy in Auburn.
