TOPSHAM
Motorists heading for Elm Street in Topsham this weekend should seek alternate routes because the road will be closed during the day so local fire departments can conduct a controlled training burn at the former nursing home at 29 Elm St. on Saturday and Sunday.
The training will take place at Amenity Manor from 7 a.m. to approximately 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, during which time Topsham Fire and Rescue Department will close Elm Street on both ends at Main Street and Foreside Road. The road will be closed to through traffic but residents and Elm Street business owners will be allowed access.
Vehicles will still be able to turn onto Foreside Road from Middlesex Road (Route 24). Traffic will not be permitted to cut through The Highlands.
Members of the Board of Selectmen, who unanimously approved the road closure Thursday night at their meeting, asked if traffic would be allowed on Elm Street to enter the Topsham Fairgrounds where a car swap event is taking place. Topsham Fire Chief Brian Stockdale told selectmen he realizes it is an inconvenience but for safety and traffic reasons, fair-bound traffic will need to enter the fair from the nearby entrance off the Route 196 Coastal Connector at the end of Community Way.
An affordable senior housing project is planned to break ground on the site soon.
