WOOLWICH
On Sunday during the Yule Sing, Woolwich handed its Boston Post Cane to the town’s new oldest citizen.
He is Loring “Larry” Edgerly, 97, who was also honored as Woolwich’s oldest veteran on Veteran’s Day.
Edgerly’s sister, Mary, is the holder of the Boston Post Cane further up the coast, in Whitefield. She’s a little older than he is. She’ll be 100 in March.
Edwin Grozier, publisher of the now-defunct Boston Post, sent 700 canes to the boards of selectmen in 700 New England towns in August 1909, inscribed with the following sentiment: “Presented by The Boston Post to the Oldest Citizen of (town’s name) to be transmitted.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
