BATH

Firefighters were called to a brush fire off in Bath at 5:37 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Bath Fire Captain Tim Merry, the brush fire was burning along power lines adjacent to a field at the end of Tarbox Street, and in the woods to the south of the power lines. Another area had ignited near Lilly Pond.

Merry said West Bath and Woolwich fire departments were able to get good sized crews together and respond quickly. When it was discovered were three areas burning rather than one, Arrowsic and Phippsburg fire departments were called to the scene as well.

There was an access road that allowed firefighters to drive right to the fire. Merry estimated only a couple acres were affected by the fire, thanks to easy access and the quick response time. There may have been a total of 30 to 40 firefighters working to extinguish the flames.

Tuesday, the Maine Forest Service again predicted high fire danger for weather zone 1, which includes Bath and the Midcoast. Under these conditions, all fine dead fuels ignite readily and fires start easily. Unattended brush and campfires are likely to escape and fires spread rapidly. Fires may become difficult to control unless they are hit hard and fast while small.

According to their Facebook page, Maine Forest Rangers worked wildfires in Hiram, Paris, Denmark and Sanford Tuesday. A forest ranger responded to the Bath fire Tuesday evening.
