Margaret E. Schmuckal

WINDHAM – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret E. “Marge” Schmuckal, 74, of Windham. She died after a brief illness at Maine Medical Center on Oct. 23, 2024.

Marge embraced life. She cherished her husband, Paul, her stepchildren, her siblings and their spouses, many nieces and nephews and numerous friends. She enjoyed travel, nature, good food, arts and crafts, and bad puns!

She was the daughter of Harry H. Schmuckal and Nettie E. Schmuckal (Reeps). She was born April 27, 1950 in Downers Grove, Ill. She attended schools in Downers Grove and La Grange, Ill. She attended Illinois State University with a double major in Art and English.

On a family vacation, she fell in love with the state of Maine. After college she moved to Portland. She began working as a clerk for the city of Portland. She retired as the Zoning Administrator 41 years later.

During her role as the Assistant Chief of Inspection, she met her husband and love of her life, Paul Brume. They were married on Oct. 19, 1991 and recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary.

During her career, she was the first female Building CEO (Code Enforcement Officer). She was both vice president and president of the Maine Building Officials and Inspection Association. She created the first certified test for the Maine CEOs.

Marge was predeceased by her parents Harry and Nettie Schmuckal; and her sister, Janet Bell Schmuckal.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Brume; stepsons Gregory Brume(Ana Troncoso) of Mesa, Ariz., Daniel Brume (Melissa LaMontagne), of Casco; Thomas Brume (Katie King), and granddaughter Bella of LeMoore, Calif.; sisters Kathryn Lynn of Oakland, Calif., Alice Williams (Greg) of Harvard, Mass., and brothers Robin Schmuckal (Liz) of Westby, Wis., Peter Schmuckal (Gigi) of Redwood City, Calif.; several nephews, nieces; and one grandnephew.

Many thanks to all the doctors and nurses at Maine Medical Center for their excellent care during her recent hospital stays.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday Nov. 1 at A.T.

Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave. Visitation will be on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
