Sports Reporter – Portland Press Herald

The Portland Press Herald seeks an outstanding, accomplished journalist to cover local sports.

We are an ambitious news organization with high standards, and we need a self-motivated reporter who can do it all – from dailies and features to investigations and data-driven journalism. We need a talented, curious, motivated reporter who can produce breaking news, strong enterprise pieces, compelling narratives, data-driven trend stories and accountability journalism. Yes, you will cover games and write season previews, but we value deeply reported enterprise above all else.

You are the right candidate for this job if you can work comfortably in all the arenas that journalism demands today: You break news on the web and share it through social media. You spend as much time with high school athletes as with their coaches and athletic directors. You see sports as a way to tell stories, not just report scores. You take video highlights with your phone. You unearth trends, employ your database and investigative skills, and use news and sports events as launch pads for blockbuster Page One tales and stories that lead our website. You are driven by competitiveness, and you’re drawn to multimedia storytelling.

Successful candidates will have several years of daily experience in an important role and be able to submit clips that demonstrate proficiency working with public records and data. We need a reporter who is aggressive but not arrogant, who is confident but works collaboratively with editors.

If you are the best at what you do and share our passion for ambitious journalism, this is a fantastic opportunity. You will be part of Maine’s finest news organization, and you will live in a region with an extraordinarily high quality of life, world-class restaurants, endless outdoor recreation and three minor-league sports teams. Daily experience is required.

We offer:

  • Health, dental and vision insurance
  • Short/long-term disability and life insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 40(k) with company match

We are an EEO employer.
