JUNE 8: A U.S. Air Force honor guard carries the casket of Malvin Greston Whitfield, who died at the age of 91, to his resting place at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. "Marvelous Mal" was a three-time Olympic gold medalist middle-distance runner, a former Tuskegee airman, and a former U.S. Foreign Service officer. He joined the military during World War II and as a 2nd lieutenant served as a tail gunner on dozens of bombing missions during the Korean War. On Wednesday, according to the Washington Post, an Air Force band joined the honor guard in formation. Three rifle volleys boomed and a flag was presented to Whitfield's 83-year-old widow, Nola Simon Whitfield.
