CUMBERLAND — A new curriculum director and interim high school principal are among significant staff changes in School Administrative District 51 this coming school year.
Sally Loughlin’s first day as director of curriculum, assessment, instruction and professional development is Aug. 23. The former SAD 75 assistant superintendent replaces David Galin, who left in June to become Portland’s first chief academic officer.
“It’s a big, big piece of the teaching and learning that goes on in the district,” SAD 51 Superintendent Bob Hasson said last week of Loughlin’s position.
Meanwhile, with Greely High School Principal Chris Mosca having left to become a school administrator in Henniker, N.H., Assistant Principal and former Dean of Students Dan McKeone will serve as interim principal while the district searches for a permanent replacement.
Mar-E Treblicock, who was interim dean of students at the high school a few years ago and has been a math and science teacher at Greely Middle School, will serve as interim assistant principal.
SAD 51 continues to implement its literacy improvement program for all grades, particularly kindergarten through eighth grade. A group of teachers obtained further professional learning in literacy this summer through Columbia University’s Teachers College, Hasson said.
The “Impact Math” curriculum is in its second year at Greely Middle School. The math improvement program feeds off the Everyday Math initiative in kindergarten through fifth grade.
“It has strong content and good process in it, and matches up very well with our students,” Hasson said.
Greely High School is entering the second year of its International Baccalaureate program, through which juniors and seniors take courses geared toward college preparation and better global awareness. This year will see Greely’s first graduates with an IB background. About 75 students are participating in the program this year.
“This is the first year that we’ll have kids that will have gone through the two years of it,” Hasson said.
Grades one through 12 will go back to school on Wednesday, Sept. 1, while kindergarten begins on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
