FALMOUTH — The park-and-ride lot at Maine Turnpike Exit 53will permanently close on Friday, Nov. 13.

According to a press release from the Maine Turnpike Authority, the lot cannot be operated safely in its present location, and efforts to fine an alternative site were unsuccessful.

The MTA has moved all of its park-and-ride lots away from toll lanes for safety since the advent of electronic toll collection. According to the press release, the Exit 53 lot is not easily accessible and is being closed as part of a larger project to make safety and capacity improvements at Exit 53. They include replacement of the toll, adding a third lane entering the highway, and constructing a new utility building for toll workers and equipment.

The project will be under construction until fall of 2017. Project updates can be found at maineturnpike.com.
