YARMOUTH — Dennis Welsh announced his candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives in District 47.

Welsh is running as an independent in the district currently represented by state Rep. Janice Cooper, D-Yarmouth. District 47 includes Yarmouth, Chebeague Island and Long Island.

A resident of Yarmouth for more than 25 years, Welsh is a professional photographer and owner of a commercial photography and video production company called Walk Tall.

In a press release he said he has been involved with various community organizations, including the Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, 317 Main Street Community Music Center, and Yarmouth Ski Club.

“With the election of a new governor and new legislature this fall, we have an exciting opportunity to take Maine in a new direction,” Welsh said in a news release. “I want to be part of that, bringing a strong, independent voice to Augusta and putting my experience as a small business person and active community member to work for the people of Yarmouth and our neighboring islands.”

Welsh said if elected, his priorities will be taxation, health care, infrastructure, the opioid crisis, education, and the challenges facing small businesses in Maine.
