The crash involved a 2003 Toyota Echo that had been reported stolen from the City of Auburn, Maine earlier in the morning. This stolen vehicle was operated by Joseph Lamoin, 33 years old of Hebron, Maine. Lamoin had a passenger at the time of the crash; she was identified as Sandra Landry, 50 years old, also of Hebron, Maine.

Just moments before the crash, witnesses observed Lamoin operating erratically and passing vehicles as he traveled south on Portland Rd. Lamoin was still in the process of passing numerous vehicles when he struck a 2002 Ford Ranger traveling north. The ford Ranger was being operated by James Hayward, 64 years old of North Yarmouth, Maine.

After striking the Ford Ranger, the vehicle operated by Lamoin spun out of control, struck an embankment and rolled over several times, coming to rest in the north bound lane of Portland Road.
