A violent thunderstorm struck South Portland and inflicted heavy damage. Trees and limbs fell across power and telephone lines, throwing half the city into darkness and disrupting telephone service to 500 homes.

Tree fell at 14 Cedar St., nearly missing the house (two people on downed tree)
