BRIDGTON—The Southwestern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) held its annual Conference Championship at Shawnee Peak on Friday, Feb. 8. Area teams repped proudly: In particular, Windhamite Sarah Hare and Gorhamite Estelle Ballard looked especially strong for their schools, with Hare winning the Giant Slalom title outright.

In the Girls Slalom, Cheverus’s Annesley Black won with a combined time (across two runs) of 1:56.76 – including a sub-minute first run of 55.95. Katie Mundell of Marshwood followed her up (2:10.93) in second, while Hare earned the proverbial bronze (2:17.11). Ballard came in fifth (2:19.00), while fellow Ram Claire Munkacsi came in 12th (2:29.48).

Meanwhile, in the Boys Slalom, Falmouth utterly dominated the standings, claiming first place through seventh; AJ Noyes led the pack at 1:43.34. Jacob Polchies turned in Gorham’s best finish, 15th, at 2:21.17. Ben White and Owen Flibbert, the only two Windham boys on the slopes, finished 22nd and 38th, respectively.

In the Girls Giant Slalom – as mentioned – Hare came out on top: With a first run of 42.82 and a second run of 44.55, she finished with a combined time of 1:27.37, just a bit more than a second ahead of Mundell (1:28.66). Ballard took sixth for Gorham (1:37.38) and Mukacsi 10th (1:40.43).

Over on the boys’ side of things, Marshwood’s Sean Maguire claimed the crown in 1:18.68; Falmouth, unsurprisingly, occupied the next six slots. Polchies finished 12th (1:39.55), while teammates Sam Cousins and Dan Popov took 17th and 20th, respectively. Windhamites White and Flibbert came in 24th and 42nd.

The lone Bonny Eagler to compete, Aubrey Denico, took 39th in the Boys Slalom and 37th in the Boys Giant Slalom.
