Letter to the editor: Chickenpox story didn’t say if sick children had been vaccinated

In regard to the article in last Wednesday’s Portland Press Herald on the chickenpox cases at Yarmouth’s Rowe School: No mention was made of whether the ill children had had chicken pox vaccinations or not. It would be interesting to know if the controversial, possibly harmful, serum is effective or not. Mabel O’Brien Falmouth

Letter to the editor: Mainstream media failed to expose deception of Obama years

The latest revelation that the White House intervened to prevent public knowledge of Hillary Clinton’s email server should forever put to rest the notion that the Obama administration is an honest broker. This newspaper, along with the rest of the mainstream media, owes its customers a heartfelt apology for carrying President Obama’s water for eight […]

Letter to the editor: Unity College goes to great lengths to avoid waste

I am writing to thank letter writer Barbara Doughty of Portland, who asked for clarification regarding a reference to the use of water bottles in a recent story about Unity College (“Unity College should keep consistent in the details,” Sept. 17). I want to thank Barbara for celebrating Unity’s sustainability mission, our affordable education for […]

Letter to the editor: Cumberland EMTs give us something to celebrate

Every day, we hear sad, horrific news about bomb explosions or of people who walk into malls or restaurants or movies and shoot completely innocent people who are just going about their daily lives and who fall victim just for being there at the wrong time. Today I would like to write about people who […]

Letter to the editor: Election cycle is distressing, but please remember to vote

This election cycle has been distressing and exhausting. I am as tired as you are of the almost total absence of discussion about what can or would be done by the major-party presidential candidates to address the many vital issues we face. So you will be relieved to know that I am not trying to […]

Letter to the editor: Jetport worried by jam, not speeding drivers

I recently had a small jar of Maine blueberry jam confiscated at the Portland International Jetport by the Transportation Security Administration. The label read “4 ounces,” supposedly exceeding the 3-ounce limit for carry-on fluids. I pointed out that part of the contents had been removed and that less than 3 ounces of the offending product […]

Letter to the editor: The last thing Maine needs is more marijuana regulation

I am writing in response to your recent report on Maine Professionals for Regulating Marijuana, who are urging stricter oversight of pot. Should Maine voters legalize its recreational use when we go to the polls in a few weeks, the last thing we need is more government regulation. We are just emerging from a 79-year […]

Letter to the editor: Trump reminds Republican, age 100, of 1930s tyrants

Dad has lived through the Depression and served in World War II. A lifelong Republican, he recently turned 100. Asked about this election, he responded, “Not Trump! He reminds me of those who rose to power in Europe during the 1930s: brash, big on promises, short on specifics and intolerant of those who were ‘different.’ […]

Letter to the editor: Return Democrat Grohman to Maine House District 12

I’m pleased to endorse Democrat Martin Grohman for re-election in Maine House District 12 in Biddeford, the seat I used to hold. Over the past two years, Marty has served the people of Biddeford and Maine well. Marty has shown that his community connections, upbringing in rural Maine, business background and moderate approach give him […]

Letter to the editor: Passing Question 2 wouldn’t ensure more school funds

I have to question the rather sanguine prediction made by letter writer Mike Fink of Portland (“Question 2 will support teaching common sense, work ethic,” Oct. 5). According to Fink, passage of Question 2, which would apply a surcharge on those earning more than $200,000, “will provide public schools and educators with the funds necessary […]
