Letters to the editor, Feb. 15, 2011Why won’t lawmakers leave us alone?
Late for work? Don’t forget to brush all the snow off your car or truck. And I mean all the snow. Rep. Jane Knapp, R-Gorham, has introduced a bill (L.D. 283) that could slap you and me with a $500 fine for driving around with snow on our vehicles. And it doesn’t stop there. A […]

Letters to the editor, Feb. 14, 2011Riverside an irreplaceable city asset
The Press Herald's support for privatizing Riverside Golf Course is shortsighted and, paradoxically, elitist.

For generations, the municipal course has provided an affordable opportunity for kids to learn the game of golf and develop what for many became a lifelong passion for the game.

Letters to the editor, Feb. 13, 2011Telegram’s May Craig recalled
I was pleased to read in Richard Connor’s Jan. 30 column that MaineToday Media has hired Jonathan Riskind to become the paper’s Washington bureau chief, and that Connor cited May Craig, who served in that position for 50 years as Washington correspondent for the Guy Gannet Newspapers. She distinguished herself at White House press conferences […]

Letters to the editor, Feb. 12, 2011No one’s said ‘yes’ to Peaks secession
Portland’s legislators are considering a bill that I and others believe would: 1. Create an exemption for Peaks Island to bypass the established statutory process for secession, which requires collecting a petition signed by at least half of the registered island voters on the island at this time — something which secessionists haven’t been able […]

More letters to the editor, Feb. 12, 2011Gov. LePage’s decisions, policies draw criticism
Does Gov. LePage believe Maine can pollute its way to prosperity? If he succeeds in transforming Maine’s reputation into a haven for polluting industries, then who will want to buy Maine seafood or drink Poland Spring water? Who will want to drive their snowmobiles in a landscape “protected” by developers? Those that remember the state […]

Letters to the editor, Feb. 11, 2011We’re Mainers, we’re used to snow
Another winter storm, and broadcasters are once again streaming the closures and cancellations along the bottom of their screens.

Perhaps they should allow equal time to those businesses that are open. During one storm, a local restaurant contacted the local station and asked them to announce that they would be open. They did. That was very cool.

Letters to the editor, Feb. 10, 2011: Chief offers specifics on new position
I was pleased to see the information put forth by The Portland Press Herald regarding the “broken windows” theory of addressing crime (“Our View: ‘Neighborhood prosecutor’ taking nibbles out of crime,” Feb. 1). However, I write to correct two points raised in your recent editorial and to relay the feedback I have received from the […]

Letters to the editor, Feb. 9, 2011Protect funds for doctors in budget
As president of the Maine Osteopathic Association and a practicing emergency physician, I am writing to implore the Legislature to prevent cuts in funding to the Doctors for Maine’s Future Scholarship Program. As Maine and the nation face a critical shortage of primary care physicians, it is imperative that we not be shortsighted. This program […]

Letters to the editor, Feb. 8, 2011U.S. role in Mideast crisis debated
I’ve been watching live coverage of the events in Cairo and the feeling that among those millions of people of all ages gathering in the square, the spirit of kindness, love, peace and determination prevails – a vibe that we felt during the ’60s and ’70s in Golden Gate Park. We shared food, water, blankets […]

Letters to the editor, Feb. 7, 2011State’s growth policies need caution
Everyone should agree that business ventures need a fast track to get needed permits and "go ahead" letters from state/federal government agencies. However, people in the private sector, business community and government offices should spend some time with a Google search on the Internet. Just search "Superfund cleanup sites in Maine."
