My wife Alison Davis works out at home in Scarborough on March 24, using her road bicycle on a stationary stand after her gym closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ability to exercise was vital to her sanity, while adjusting to working from home and helping her three children begin the process of remote learning.

Bridget Davis, 14, leaps in the air while taking a walk at Ferry Beach in Scarborough on March 14. By mid-March, schools had shut down, and Mainers took to the stores to load up on necessities as the threat of the virus loomed. This two-hour walk with my daughter will be one of the moments that sticks with me as I remember the transition from our normal everyday lives to what we would soon learn to be the "new normal".

Bridget Davis, 15, smiles as she is surprised by a visit from her friend from Gorham on her birthday, April 8. Since the start of the pandemic, we have celebrated three birthdays in our house, which was challenging in some ways, but also a convenient excuse to celebrate.

The stress and uncertainty caused by the pandemic has created a need to “return” to my past and to periods of my life in which I found joy and meaning. While on assignment in early April, I found myself near Biddeford Pool, where I attended college, met my future wife and began developing a strong interest in photography. This view of the beach, with the house many know as the “Kodak House” or the “Camera House,” brought back a flood of memories.

My daughters, who share a bedroom, decided that if they had to be cooped up at home, they needed their own space. Alison measures sheets of drywall while building a wall in their bedroom. Having never constructed a wall before, I had my doubts that we could actually manage the task, but my wife has the ability to do pretty much anything, so it wasn't surprising that we actually did manage it.

After my daughters spent the afternoon painting various objects, including rocks and themselves, I found hand prints on the back patio. It was dusk and I had just gotten home from work when I discovered them. Memories rushed in of my daughters as little girls. I thought, "what a childish thing to do," and also "what a beautiful thing to find."

Finn Davis, 17, looks out of his bedroom window after coming home from work on May 13. His mother and I struggled with the decision to let him start work at a well-known seafood take-out restaurant, but ultimately found that the benefits outweighed the risks.

My brother Brian Davis of Scarborough talks to our parents Anne and Michael Kendall at their doorstep in Portland after we dropped off Mother's Day gifts on May 12. The Kendalls live in an independent living facility where visitors have been prohibited since the outbreak of the virus. To date, the facility has no known cases of COVID-19.

After the redesignation of gyms in Maine's four-stage reopening plan allowed for outdoor classes of 10 or less, Bridget attends a youth fitness class in Scarborough on May 13. It was great to see the beautiful smile come across her face, a sight that had become less frequent in the past several weeks.

My mother waves to me from her window in Portland on May 12, after my brother and I surprised her with a walk-by visit while dropping off gifts for Mother's Day. It has been over two months since I have hugged her, and while that is hard for me to endure, I am so grateful that she is healthy and smiling.
