Rachel Merriam is seen on Front Street in Hallowell along the Kennebec River on Thursday. When the ice jam flood happened early Sunday morning, Merriam was out of town. The water had risen several inches above the bottom of her car's doors when her roommate tried driving it out. The car stalled behind the Quarry Tap Room, and several people helped push it from there up onto Water Street, she said.

Hyde and others have been cleaning, bleaching and painting as they get ready to reopen the bar, which was flooded because of a river ice jam, sometime next week. The ice-clogged Kennebec River can be seen through windows above walls where they had to pull off water-damaged insulation and wallboard.
