This undated photo shows the east end of House Island in the 1920s, which held an immigration quarantine station set up to process thousands of people fleeing war and famine in Europe, a detention barracks and a home for the public health officer. Immigration stations also were built in other large cities on the East Coast, including Boston and New York City.
