Zainab Almatwari, 17, stands outside her Westbrook home. Almatwari is a senior at Westbrook High School, and this year was supposed to be her first and only prom. She chose not to go to prom her junior year because she had multiple AP tests that weekend. "I'm definitely bummed," Almatwari said.

Park said she knows that she'll have another year for prom, but she is still sad to miss out on this time with her friends. "You only get so many years with the people you grow up with in your home town," Park said.

Almashkoor said Casco Bay sent out an online survey to seniors asking if they would want to have a virtual prom, a prom for seniors over one of the holiday breaks in upcoming school year or use the funds for a five- or ten-year reunion.

The couple went to prom together their junior year and were planning on going together this year as well. "I don't like prom at all, but Lauren likes it a lot so it made it more fun," Allen said.
A senior at Cape Elizabeth High School, Emily Ecker, 17, wears her prom dress in her backyard on May 2. "I think I'm more sad about graduation," Ecker said. "I like prom, but it is different than in the movies. Graduation finalizes everything. It's the period at the end of the sentence."
Gabriel M'Bambi, 17, a senior at Deering High School, wears his prom outfit outside of his home in Portland on May 22. M'Bambi is the senior class president and was in charge of planning prom. They already had a venue picked out for the dance. "It is a bummer," M'Bambi said. "Last year, it wasn't really our prom. We were excited to finally have our own."
Fiona Ferrell, 17, a senior at Falmouth High School, poses in her prom dress outside of her home on May 6. Ferrell said that right after prom her junior year she and her friends started talking about their senior prom. "We're missing out on all the senior rites of passage," Ferrell said.
