Red Sox changes through the years ... 2003: Boston lost Game 7 of the ALCS to the Yankees. Manager Grady Little, above, criticized for leaving Pedro Martinez in too long, was fired four days later.
2006: After the Red Sox didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in three years, Boston fired hitting coach Ron Jackson, above, and pitching coach Dave Wallace.
2010: After missing the playoffs, Boston traded three prospects for 1B Adrian Gonzalez (seven-year, $154 million extension), and Carl Crawford, above, (seven-year, $142 million).
2011: After a 7-20 collapse to end the season out of the playoffs, Manager Terry Francona, above, was forced out and GM Theo Epstein left for the Cubs.
2012: Out of the playoffs, Boston traded Gonzalez, Crawford and Josh Beckett, above, in a salary dump. After the season, Manager Bobby Valentine was fired.
2014: After a last-place finish, GM Ben Cherington offered big contracts to 3B Pablo Sandoval, above, (five years, $95 million) and slugger Hanley Ramirez (four years, $88 million).
2015: Headed to a second straight last-place finish, Cherington lost authority when Dave Dombrowski, above, was hired as the new president of baseball operations.
