Two trials sought by men accused of killing, burning 3

Lawyers for two men charged with shooting three Maine residents and burning their bodies in a car in Bangor during a drug dispute have asked a judge for separate trials.

Attorneys for Randall Daluz of Brockton, Mass., and Nicholas Sexton of Warwick, R.I., made their request at a hearing Wednesday.

Daluz’s lawyer argued that the state has a stronger case against Sexton, and his client can’t get a fair trial if they are tried together. Prosecutors argued against two trials.

WABI-TV reports that the judge did not rule, but gave defense attorneys a week to submit supporting materials. Jury selection was scheduled for April 28.

The suspects have pleaded not guilty to killing Daniel Borders of Hermon; Nicolle Lugdon of Eddington; and Lucas Tuscano of Bradford in August 2012.

Shapleigh man injured in collision on Route 109

A Shapleigh man was taken to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford after a crash in Acton on Thursday morning.

Paul Jackson, 52, was driving south on Route 109 in a 2013 Kia Soul when it collided with a 2013 GMC cargo van driven by Brian Richards, 57, of Sanford, said Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The van was going north on Route 109 when it turned left to go into the parking lot of the Acton Trading Post, crossing the path of the oncoming car, the sheriff’s office said.

Jackson was knocked unconscious when his car hit the rear quarter panel of the van. He was treated by Acton and Shapleigh rescue workers and Sanford paramedics.

Maine man gets 33 months for attempted ‘sextortion’

A Maine man will spend nearly three years in prison for attempting to extort a New Hampshire woman using sexually explicit photos of her stored on a laptop he stole from her.

Federal officials say John Bryan Villegas, 23, of Kittery, Maine, was sentenced to 33 months in prison Thursday in U.S. District Court in Concord.

U.S. Attorney John Kacavas said Villegas pleaded guilty to a cyber-stalking crime known as “sextortion.” Officials say Villegas stole the woman’s laptop during a burglary, then threatened to send explicit images to her neighbors and friends if she did not send him sexually explicit pictures and video of herself.

Villegas pleaded guilty to the federal charge in September. He was convicted of burglary in state court in January.
