    It has been noted that the fortunate residents of Deering can acquire a fine education, from kindergarten through college, without even leaving the neighborhood. The heart of this Portland district is Deering Center, a walkable area of schools; services such as the Burbank Branch Library and the Portland Vet Center; restaurants and shops; and appealing, leafy residential streets that illustrate why Deering was dubbed “A City of Homes” in 1897.

    Maine Places to Love: Old Orchard Beach

    In southern Maine, few things say “summer” as eloquently as the words “Old Orchard Beach.” Who can resist the walkable town’s gorgeous expanse of sandy oceanfront, or its seasonal attractions such as the Pier, Palace Playland and Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf? Old Orchard Beach has a rich history, too. Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra were drawn to perform here; Charles Lindbergh landed here. When visitors discover “OOB,” they return. Residents happily stay put.

    A pleasant and convenient 17-minute Casco Bay Lines ferry ride from the Old Port, Peaks Island is a Portland neighborhood, one whose year-round population multiplies during the summer, and whose scenic beauty and range of attractions (biking, kayaking, restaurants, inns, shops, small museums, and walking and golf-cart tours) draw scores of day-trippers. People who visit tend to conclude that residents are very lucky to live on Peaks.

    Ogunquit offers a village quality of life, and is a renowned haven for artists. According to legend, it was named by the Abenakis; the word means “beautiful place by the sea.” People who live here agree, and have many reasons for finding Ogunquit beautiful, including the scent of beach roses on sea breezes wafting along the Marginal Way walking path; playing tag with the incoming tide; and the nostalgic feel of strolling among quaint buildings, coves, and pedestrian bridges.     Maine Places to Love: Cumberland

    Incorporated in 1821, Cumberland was named by Ephraim Sturdivant, a prominent sea captain and the town’s first treasurer.
