1937: Regular Portland post office clerks and carriers, numbering 100 and 75 respectively, augmented by 150 clerks and 220 carriers, handled more than 300,000 pieces of mail and all but a few thousand had been cleaned up by midnight on Dec. 20. A similar volume was expected on the 21st but it, too was being taken care of as fast as received. In the photo clerks are 'casing' or sorting the mail.
