Pirates, Devils play to tie in shortened exhibition

Portland’s Spencer Bennett and Albany’s Mike Sislo each finished with a goal and an assist as the Pirates and Devils finished in a 2-2 tie in an AHL preseason game at West Springfield, Mass.

The game was called after two periods because of unsafe ice conditions.

Donny Maloney also scored for the Pirates and Aaron Rome had two assists.

NHL: The New York Islanders agreed to a one-year deal with defenseman Steve Staios, who has been at the Islanders’ training camp and played in three preseason games.

• The Los Angeles Kings signed forward Trent Hunter to a one-year deal. Hunter missed most of last season after knee surgery.

COLLEGES

MEN’S LACROSSE: The University of Southern Maine named Sam Lane head coach of the men’s lacrosse team. Lane joined the program last season as an assistant coach. He replaces Malcolm Chase, who resigned in September.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Nicole Poland scored on an assist by Esther Palmieri for Southern Maine Community College (3-3) in a 3-1 loss to UMaine-Machias at South Portland.

MEN’S SOCCER: Blais Whitney scored twice to give Southern Maine CC (6-2) a 2-1 win over UMaine-Machias at South Portland.

BOYS’ SOCCER: Blake Downey scored in the 15th minute and Stephen Sherbahn and Ryan Leonard added second-half goals 1:18 apart as Berwick Academy defeated Dexter School 3-0 at Brookline, Mass.

BASKETBALL

NBA: With time running out to reach a bargaining agreement in time to save the Nov. 1 start of the regular season, All-Stars LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Kevin Durant joined the players’ association executive committee for what union president Derek Fisher called an “engaging” meeting with the owners’ labor relations committee.

GOLF

DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP: Tommy Fleetwood and Michael Hoey shared the second-round lead at 12-under 132 at Carnoustie, Scotland.

PGA: Kevin Na and Charlie Wi joined first-round leader Jhonattan Vegas at 12-under 130 to share the lead after 36 holes of the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Corey Pavin shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the opening round of the SAS Championship at Cary, N.C.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Oakland rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s five-game suspension was upheld by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

Pryor had appealed the punishment, which was related to NCAA violations he committed while at Ohio State. Pryor entered the NFL supplemental draft instead of serving a five-game ban with the Buckeyes after being involved in a cash-for-memorabilia scandal.

BASEBALL

MAJOR LEAGUES: Chicago White Sox closer Sergio Santos agreed to an $8.25 million, three-year contract that includes three club options.

• Atlanta fired hitting coach Larry Parrish after the Braves ranked 13th in the league in hitting (.243) and 10th in runs.
