Mitchell describes his flag design: “The anchor design incorporates four colors; they symbolize the history and ‘ties’ (rope) of Maine shipbuilding with wood, iron, and steel. “The rope and anchor style honor the anchor from the current Maine flag. “I’m still not thrilled with the pine tree, but since it is from the 1901 flag, I’m leaving it there. “I think this would be way easier to spot and pick out at a distance, versus the other seal-on-a-bedsheet style state flags.” M.D. Mitchell, Scarborough Maine State flag
