Falmouth boy to exhibit during Youth Art Month
Quinn Hagerty, a seventh-grader at Falmouth Middle School, was chosen by his teacher, Simon Adams, to display his charcoal self-portrait during the month of March at the Portland Museum of Art.
Creative works from Maine art students will be on display during the multi-media exhibition sponsored by Maine Art Education Association. The exhibit highlights Youth Art Month, a national celebration sponsored by the Council for Art Education. The annual celebration, which typically takes place in March, emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality art programs in Maine schools. This event marks 24 years of collaboration between the Portland Museum of Art and the Maine Art Education Association to celebrate student creativity from kindergarten-12th grade.
The exhibition runs until April 1, on the lower ground floor. The celebratory opening reception will be 4-7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, when admission to the Youth Art Month exhibition will be free.
NYA expands Lower School, programs
North Yarmouth Academy announces new Lower School programs and facility expansion for the 2018-19 school year. NYA will be renovating a residence at 24 Storer St. to house its toddler program. The new Toddler House and Learning Cottage will include two spacious toddler classrooms as well as additional resource space for teachers. The new facility is adjacent to both the main Lower School building and the Lower School playground. Enrollment in the NYA Lower School has increased each year since its inception in 2013. The new construction will support a growing demand for the toddler program and allow the Academy to repurpose space to support other offerings in the Lower School.
NYA will also be also adding new programs and personnel to enhance the student experience in the Lower School:
• A literacy specialist will join the staff as part of the Academy’s newly designed academic support and enrichment program. The specialist will come into the classroom to work with students at all reading levels in grades K-4 in conjunction with the classroom teacher. The specialist will also be available as a resource to families to work with individual students as needed.
• The Academy will add a part-time science position to enhance the Lower School science program. This teacher will bring additional hands-on science activities in grades K-4 utilizing NYA’s Mertz Science Center, the NYA greenhouse, Innovation Lab, and the natural environment surrounding NYA.
• In addition to half and full day options, NYA will be offering a new “lunch bunch” option in the early childhood program for students who would like to extend their morning and join their classmates for this important social experience.
