For the second time in this campaign, Lee Humiston has hosted a political rally at the Maine Military Museum, in a building leased to him by the city of South Portland. Following a press release from the Republican National Committee published on the SouthPortlander blog, Mr. Humiston has been busy responding to criticism about his using the “museum” for political purposes.

In response to one critic, Mr. Humiston stated: “As to the city being complicit, PLEASE… no one there is at fault. We are in a terrible shape if we’ve reached a point where someone can be at fault with association alone.”

Yes, Mr. Humiston, we have reached the point where people are at fault by association. If you doubt that, just look at the accusations of your “friend” John McCain and his running mate to see that the candidate you have been hosting at “your” museum has been accusing Barack Obama of supporting terrorists because he served on an education board with a person who was part of the Weather Underground when Obama was 8 years old. Just listen, Mr. Humiston, to the chants of people attending a

McCain and Palin rally shouting “terrorist” when asked “Who is Barack Obama?” after accusing him of “associating” with a former domestic terrorist.

So yes, Mr. Humiston, following the logic of your candidate for president, the city is complicit in promoting political support for your candidate for president by allowing you to hold multiple political rallies and events in a building you apparently rent in a public park. I doubt you would have been allowed to lease the building if the citizens had known you intended to use it for political purposes.

Perhaps you should do the honorable thing and turn back the lease, and find another facility for your war memorabilia.
