The Portland Players in South Portland will open its new season with “Fiddler on the Roof,” which will run from Sept. 25 through Oct. 11.

The original Broadway production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” opened in 1964 and the beloved musical is the winner of nine Tony Awards. Set in the little village of Anatevka, Russia in 1905. The story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.

The remaining shows of the 2015-2016 season are “Disney’s Mary Poppins,” which opens on Dec. 4; “Born Yesterday,” which opens on Jan. 29; “The Crucible,” which opens on April 25; and “The Wild Party,” which opens on May 20.
