Morris retains selectman’s seat
Jonathan Morris has retained his seat on the Pownal Board of Selectmen, by a 38-vote margin over his closest competitor, in municipal elections held on June 9.
Morris received 166 votes, while Shawn Bennett, the town’s former road commissioner, got 124 votes in the three-way race. Timothy Grant, who works for Durham Public Works, was third with 24 votes.
Morris, a schoolteacher, has been on the board for eight years. Terms are three years.
The annual town meeting was scheduled for Monday, June 15, which is after the Tri-Town Weekly publication deadline.
Pownal residents on June 9 voted down a $29,407,304 Regional School Unit 5 budget, which also failed in Durham but passed due to big support in Freeport. Morris said prior to the budget referendum that he sees the cost of running RSU 5 as a “huge challenge,” which leaves the Board of Selectmen “scratching our heads at every meeting.”
Folk dancing celebrates Father’s Day
Dancing with Dads, a Father’s Day celebration with traditional dance and music from the world, has been scheduled for Sunday, June 21, at Mallett Hall. The dancing starts at 4:30 p.m. with beginner and family-friendly dances led by folk dance enthusiast Marie Wendt. There will be a break for potluck supper for those interested in sharing a meal together. The evening concludes with a mix of dances from around the world. The suggested donation for the family dance is $3 per person, and for the whole evening, $5 for adults, $3 children and $12 family.
The dance is sponsored by the Pownal/Portland International Folk Dancers, who also have a monthly dance in Portland on first Sundays. For more information, call 688-2293 or email [email protected].

Cost is $10 to secure a spot. Buskers can perform for free. The deadline to sign up is June 24. No rain date. For more information, contact Jamie and Wren Pearson at 408-3185 or for updates see www.facebook.com/fuegodiablopownal.
