Coffee makers would be banned and school thermostats would be lowered to 65 degrees under energy conservation measures proposed by school officials.
Superintendent Alan Hawkins said board members aere hoping to get feedback from students, staff and parents on the proposed policies, which the school board reviewed for the first time at its Sept. 9 meeting.
The School Board has already transferred an extra $25,000 to the district’s energy accounts, but Hawkins said it is still likely the district will run over its energy budget this year. The current budget for heating oil, electicity and fuel is $700,038, about 4 percent of the school’s $19.8 million budget.
Hawkins says changes need to be made across the board to keep energy use in check and make conservation a way of life at distirct schools.
Some of the proposed new rules are as follows:
1. All electronic appliances, such coffee pots and microwaves, will be banned from classrooms. Teachers will be able to use electronic equipment provided by the district in the staff lounge.
2. Lights will be shut off in any room not in use.
3. Lower thermostats to 65 degrees during the day and 50 degrees at night. Currently, buildings are kept at 70 degrees during the day. Students will be notified to “dress appropriately.”
4. No one but the maintenance supervisor may increase the heat in any school building.
5. After-school access to school buildings will be limited. Rooms and wings will be shut down as soon as they are vacated at the end of the school day.
6. Buildings will be completely closed after school at least one day a week.
While other school districts are considering a four-day school week to conserve energy, Hawkins said it is unlikely that Cape would make such a drastic change. The town is so small that eliminating a day of busing would not save a huge amount of money, as it would in a more far-flung school district, Hawkins said. Also, Hawkins said he is concerned that a four-day week would be bad for education and parents would have difficulty arranging for childcare.
