Having read with interest the article “RSU 5 budget stings smaller towns” on the April 2 issue of your paper, I have a suggestion for a revised title: “New state valuations sting smaller towns.”

As mentioned in the article itself, “The impact to taxpayers of the two smaller towns is the result of valuation changes at the state level.” It is because of these new valuations, not the RSU 5 budget itself, that taxes may rise disproportionately in Durham and Pownal.

As a working mother of three young children who oftentimes can only read headlines, I find it problematic to have a misleading title on a subject that already causes friction between the RSU 5 towns.

Given the controversial nature of the RSU 5 budget and the fact that like me, many will not get to the details embedded in the text of the article itself, I ask the Tri-Town Weekly to carefully choose titles that represent factual information and that do not inflame an apprehensive public.
