I became a senior long ago, but I don’t feel “entitled” to have our taxpayers build and maintain a senior center exclusively for use by those older than age 55.
Some Scarborough town councilors think the town should use our taxes to construct and maintain a senior center. We already said NO! Will they dishonor the vote?
They want to build and maintain a senior center in spite of the citizens’ wishes. The council seems to feel that the no vote was invalid because some voters might have voted no because of the proposed YMCA.
Can the town declare the public’s vote invalid because they think voters might have been thinking about the YMCA when they cast their ballots?
And worse, the council seems to want to hide taxpayer’s money under the $400,000 expenditure limit to prevent us from being allowed to vote on it again!
Councilor Jeff Messer said, “The citizens spoke and we have to honor that,” but he really seems to want to dishonor, to violate, our wishes.
Would it be discriminatory to give “entitlements” to residents based on their age? Would we lock out all children and everyone else who is not elderly, even though we all pay taxes?
If we are going to build something, let’s make it a community center, with everyone welcome, regardless of their age.
