Country music, bean supper set
On Saturday, April 16, a baked bean supper and country music concert/dance will be held at Windham Veterans Center, North Windham. The dinner only is $8, concert only is $10, and a “combo” ticket is $15. Supper will be from 5-6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. This will be to benefit the Windham Veterans Association to maintain the center.
Spaghetti supper
The Windham Fire-Rescue Association is hosting a spaghetti supper Friday, April 22, at 5 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for children, 5 and under are free. Also on the menu are salad, garlic bread, pasta dishes and desserts.
Roast beef dinner
On Saturday, April 23, from 5-6:30 p.m., Windham Hill United Church of Christ will hold its semi-annual roast beef dinner including roast beef with gravy, mashed potato, green beans, coleslaw and pie – all you can eat for $10 adults, and $5 for under age 12.
News from Parks & Rec
Windham Parks and Recreation has a new activity registration system and website. To get started, visit the new site at www.WindhamRecreation.com and create an account with all your household information. Once you have done that, registration in any of the programs will be a simple process, and this will keep you in the loop of anything that is happening with the department or with other community organizations.
New this year is the Gaelic Football League, a co-ed sport for boys and girls in grades 6-8. This is a six-week program beginning Monday, May 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Gambo Field. Players will be given instructions about the sport that is like soccer, basketball and rugby and will participate in a tournament in South Portland on June 18. The fee is $35. Registration deadline is Friday, April 29 at town hall or on line at www.WindhamRecreation.com.
Historical Society opens
The Windham Historical Society has announced its spring hours, which will be from 10 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, beginning on April 26. Stop in at the museum at 234 Windham Center Road and visit the new displays and find out about the progress of the Village Green. VFW Chili Cook-Off
Enter your favorite Chili in the 2nd Annual VFW Chili Cook-Off to be held at the Windham Veterans Center from 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30. This year prizes are even higher with first place $150, second $100, third $50. Call Willie at 228-4329 to get an anonymous chili entry number and deliver your chili 4:30-5 p.m. on the 30th.
Once again, Applebee’s will provide New England North Manager Jeff Gambadella to judge entries. There will also be a Silent Auction with more than 75 items. Call Willie if you have an item to donate to the VFW. Chili entrants and children under 12 are free, all others $8. All proceeds go directly to help your veterans and their families. The Veterans Center is located at 35 Veterans Drive in Windham, behind Hannaford.
Concert at church
On Saturday, April 16, a David Young CD release concert will be held at Faith Lutheran Church at 6 p.m. He has the vocal style of Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Admission is free and donations are encouraged. There will be a free will offering as well, a portion of which will go to the church Benevolence Fund.
Quilting workshop
Come join us for some fun quilting at Lakes Region Senior Center on Tuesdays, starting at 9:30 a.m. Try your hand on different patterns and maybe even come up with a quilt. Beginners and experienced quilters are welcome, sewing with a machine or by hand. For more information, call Avis at 892-0298. The Center is at 40 Acorn St., Gorham.

Library display
“Making something out of nothing” artwork by Ginger Brown, features drawings in colored pencil and a few paintings and is on display through the month of April. Ginger is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and a Windham resident who has worked in commercial and publishing illustration. She paints weekly with the Mill Painters at the Dana Warp Mill in Westbrook. She is also teaching a class in colored pencil for Windham/Raymond Adult Education.
Food pantry, Clothes Closet open
The Windham Food Pantry has baby foods available such as cereal, Enfamil, Pediasure, fruits and veggies. Just call the pantry at 892-1931 to make an appointment if you need any of these items. Summer is just around the corner. It’s a good time to donate snacks and juice boxes for children so the pantry can put together packets to help supply children of the client’s families who normally receive snacks during the school year with healthy snacks. The Clothes Closet, which is a free resource, has a good inventory of spring/summer clothing and could use household linens and bedding. The food pantry and Clothes Closet are in the building on Gray Road, right across from Friends Church and adjacent to the Windham Public Safety Building.
Annual golf scramble
St. Ann’s Episcopal Church is holding a Golf Scramble on Sunday, May 22, at 1 p.m. at Spring Meadows Golf Course in Gray. The day begins with registration at noon, a cookout following golf and awards ceremony following the cookout. Proceeds will benefit the church and its ministries including the Windham Neighbors Helping Neighbors, RSU 14 Backpack Program for school supplies; Monday Meals (free community dinner program, Essentials Pantry for families’ non-food needs, and Long Creek Youth Development with Christmas gifts and birthday cards. Thrift Shop opens
The North Windham Union Church thrift shop is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon. Spring bargains may be found in adult and children’s clothing. The children’s room has books, games, and toys. Shoppers will find a lot of household items that may be great for camp. The Thrift Shop is at the church, near the corner of Route 302 and 115.
Maine Horse Jubilee
On Sunday, April 24, from 1-3 p.m., the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals on River Road celebrates the national ASPCA Help A Horse Day and competes for a chance to win up to $25,000 in grant prizes. Scheduled activities include a horse training demonstration, photography, farrier demonstration, children’s activities and more. The event is free and family friendly.
