Award-winning children’s author Kimberley Ridley and illustrator Rebekah Raye recently visited Scarborough’s three primary schools, Blue Point School, Eight Corners and Pleasant Hill School.
They spoke to students about their latest book, “The Secret Bay,” which is a non-fiction account of the flora and fauna in estuaries, including marshes. During the visit, Ridley held writing workshops with all the second-grade classes and Raye did a drawing workshop with all the first-grade classes.
The event also included an all-school assembly and a session with the kindergarten classes in each of the three schools. The program was arranged by the school district’s library staff and paid for with a grant from the Scarborough Education Foundation. The goal of the program was to give the town’s youngsters a different avenue into the school district’s writing and science curriculum, especially as it relates to the ocean and the marsh.
