PARIS (AP) — A Paris man sentenced to 40 years in prison for attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend and her grandparents by setting fire to their home has lodged a second appeal with the state’s highest court in an attempt to reverse his conviction.
A lawyer for 25-year-old Andrew Freeman of Paris has asked the Supreme Judicial Court for the right to appeal a lower court’s decision upholding his conviction.
Last month, a Superior Court justice denied Freeman’s post-conviction review appealing his sentence on the grounds that his trial attorney was incompetent.
The Sun Journal reports that Freeman’s new attorney contends the lower court judge inappropriately denied the request.
He was convicted of arson and attempted murder in 2012. A previous appeal to the high court was rejected.
