SACO — Lorraine C. Boutet, 88, of Saco passed away early Tuesday morning at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born Oct. 25, 1926, the daughter of Edward and Aline Lambert DeMeule and was raised on Sullivan Street in Biddeford alongside her four sisters and brother. She graduated valedictorian of her class at St. Andre’s High School in 1945.
She and her husband, Chandler, were married on Sept. 13, 1947. They made their home on Weymouth Street in Saco, where they raised their four girls, and where Lorraine remained until two weeks before her death.
Lorraine meant so very many things to so many people. She was a doting Memere, a longtime employee of the Children’s Shop in Biddeford, a sports fan and good neighbor. She was a bookkeeper for Boutet’s Garage, an accomplished baker of pork pies and date nut pinwheels, a matriarch, a sister, a wife and always and above all ”“ a caretaker. Her greatest legacy is her close-knit family, who surrounded her and lifted her up with love until her final moments.
She is preceded in death by: her loving husband, Chandler; infant granddaughter, Tara Dunton; sisters, Pauline Parish and Yvette Boutet; and son-in-law, Timothy Loughlin.
She is survived by: her two sisters, Theresa Giguere and Jeanne Gelinas; her brother, Edward DeMeule; and her lifelong friend, Therese Rousseau. She also leaves behind her four devoted daughters, Janice Loughlin, Barbara Dunton Russell and husband Charles, Patricia Peterson and husband Mark, and Kathleen Santamore and husband Clifford; and many nieces and nephews.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life: Tonya Loughlin Pettaway, her daughters Alexandra and Alana, and their father Claude Pettaway; Jessica Dunton Fidalgo, her husband Paul, and their children Toby and Phoebe; Jill Blake and her husband Justin ,who are expecting Lorraine’s fifth great-grandchild; and her only grandson, Paul Chandler Santamore and his partner Brooke Ladd. She also shared a special bond with her son-in-law, Ray Dunton.
The family is deeply grateful for the friendship and compassion shown to Lorraine by her caregivers Sally Tardiff and Katie Koles.
Calling hours will be at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James Street, Saco, on Thursday, April 30 from 4-7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 1 at 11 a.m. at Most Holy Trinity church in Saco. Burial will take place in the summer.
