PORTLAND (AP) — Maine officials say a temporary closure of the mouth of the Penobscot River to lobster and crab fishing because of mercury contamination risk has become permanent.

A spokesman for the Maine Department of Marine Resources says the closure of the seven-square-mile area will allow for a two-year study. The spokesman says officials will monitor the area, determine if the closure area needs to be expanded, and whether the closure will be lengthened beyond two years.
