WELLS— With the new year approaching, local high school teams are grinding through the thick of the season.

The Wells girls basketball team has jumped to a solid 4-1 start and feature one of the more dynamic teams in their division.

When examining the Warrior’s roster, the first noticable element to the this team is the youth.

The Warriors not only have a handful of freshaman players, but they do not have a single senior on the team.

Wells coach Don Abbott has been impressed by his team’s performcance so far, and feels that the youth has never put them at a disadvantage.

One reason why Abbott is not concerned about the lack of senior talent is because of the prior experience many of the girls have gained.

Not only did a handful of these young players get time on the court last season, but many have been thrown into the fire in the first five games.

“While we have no seniors, we have many girls who gained valuable varsity experience last year,” said Abbott. “We have the unique advantage of being both young and experienced at the same time. That should serve us well as the season progresses.”

The Warriors have also played very unselfish basketball in the first five games.

Abbott has been pleased with the way new players step up each game for the Warriors.

“We have played 5 games, and we have had 5 different girls lead us in scoring. That sort of depth and balance is a luxury that can help a team absorb an injury, foul trouble, sickness, or whatever adversity that may present itself,” said Abbott. “We pride ourselves on playing as one cohesive unit all the time.”

Although Abbott is happy with the solid start, he admits that every game has and will be a challenge looking ahead.

“I am pleased with how we have started the season,” said Abbott. “A 4-1 record at the holiday break is a good start. With many quality opponents looming on our schedule, every night is a test in the Western Maine Conference.”

As the season progresses, the Warriors will look to improve each day.

Abbott has been impressed with his team’s overall play, and takes a great deal of pride in their defensive efforts.

Looking ahead, progression and strong defense will be key according to Abbott.

“We need to keep competing every night, and continue to embrace the process of getting better,” said Abbott. “Defensively we have been pretty solid, giving up under 30 points per game. If we continue to pride ourselves on that level of defensive intensity, we will be able to remain competitive and give ourselves a chance to win games.”
