York’s goal scorers were Grace Campbell and Emma Ford. Goalie Anna Hickey recorded a shutout with 6 saves, while Biddeford goalie Rebekah Guay made 21 saves.
From the opening faceoff York pressured Biddeford. Although the Tigers held their own in the possession battle, they could not move the puck out of their zone for much of the first period.
Fortunately for Biddeford, Guay had an impressive first period, saving the first 10 shots on net. Paige Boudreau also got in on the action and made an nice save in open ice in front of the net.
York was finally able to get past Guay with 2:49 remaining in the first, when Campbell was able to force the puck through after taking a shot off of the rebounded save by Guay.
York’s pressure continued into the second, and Biddeford did not get a shot on net until the first minute of the second period.
Biddeford had some opportunities, including a play when Cali Collard received a well placed pass in front of the net but was stopped by Hickey.
At the 8:04 mark in the second, Ford was able to put the puck in the top right corner of the goal off of Guay’s shoulder and put York up 2-0.
The third period was much closer, with York only outshooting Biddeford 4-3. Guay continued to impress throughout the period and made some key saves including back to back kick save stops.
The Tigers played hard until the end, but were not able to push York hard enough to get themselves back into it.
According to Biddeford coach Ashley Potvin, her team dug themselves in a bit of a hole early on in the contest.
“The first two periods we came out flat, we weren’t skating to the best of our ability,” said Potvin. “I was happy that they were able to come out strong in the third and recover from the first two periods.”
Part of the reason that York managed to apply so much pressure was due to the Tigers’ penalty trouble, collecting four penalties in the first two periods.
“Their second goal came after we had to kill two penalties and we just do not have a deep enough bench to kill consecutive penalties. I definitely think penalties contributed to that,” said Potvin.
Despite the loss, there were a few bright spots including Guay’s performance. Although York was able to pressure the Tigers for the majority of the game, Guay kept her composure and made some key stops.
“Rebekah had a stellar game. This was definitely the best game she has had so far. She had great vision, and she really kept us in it when we were struggling,” said Potvin.
Biddeford drops to 1-3 on the season.
