To the Editor:
For as long as I can remember, kids have been playing in the streets. In my time I’ve observed them playing stickball, riding scooters, bicycles, sliding sleds, street hockey and in recent years, skate boards. The list goes on.
When new skills are introduced to kids in gym, ballfield, ice rink or what have you, the kids practice those skills in the streets and become proficient.
The obvious concern is for the kids, and the motorists — and the anguish of an accident would be immeasurable.
Can things be done to help? One, talk to the parents, guardians, interested parties, this was done by more than one person.
Two, talk to the kids about danger, about awareness, and about anticipation This was done, again by more than one person
For the motorist, I will investigate the possibility of a street sign that reads “Children at Play.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
