BRUNSWICK
Town voters again ratified the 2014 school budget Tuesday by a count of 457-208.
It was the second time taxpayers had to validate the $35 million budget; the initial vote on June 11 was rendered moot by last-minute spending changes at the state level.
Despite the logistical headache of scheduling — and paying for — a second budget validation vote, the state’s budget wrangling ultimately worked out well for the town: It resulted in an unexpected boon of $441,000 to fund teacher retirement pensions, which now is the town’s responsibility.
The twice-validated budget holds the Fiscal Year 2014 tax rate increase at 6.6 percent, as mandated by Town Council.
