BRUNSWICK — A grant received this week from BJ’s Charitable Foundation means Tedford Shelter staffers have money to help their clients find work.
Shelter administrators applied for the $5,000 grant in April.
“We were notified that we had received the grant last week, but the check actually arrived Monday,” said Martha Stein, the shelter’s director of community relations. “We thought it might be December before we learned if we got it, so it was really nice that we heard back so quickly.”
BJ’s Charitable Foundation works to support hunger prevention, self sufficiency, health care and education in communities surrounding the BJ’s Wholesale Clubs. The nearest storefronts are in Auburn and Portland.
Tedford’s adult and family emergency shelters are located in Brunswick; other facilities for individuals and families, including those with physical or mental disabilities, are located in Bath, Brunswick, Lewiston and Auburn.
Tedford’s various programs provided aid to 935 people in 2012. Stein estimated that about 100 to 250 of them could be eligible for aid from the grant.
