HARPSWELL

A seasonal home at 102 Sunset Cove Road was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon.

Harpswell Fire Administrator Arthur Howe said no one was at the residence when the fire was spotted by a neighbor and reported to authorities at 12:44 p.m.

Firefighters from all three Harpswell fire departments responded. Howe estimated it took between 45 minutes and an hour to get the fire under control. No firefighters were injured, but a man, who Howe said likely got too close to the fire, sustained a minor injury.

The fire occurred in a fairly dense neighborhood where homes are about 1,000 feet apart, Howe said. A small shed on a neighboring property was destroyed by the fire as well.

Still on scene Tuesday afternoon, Howe said the origin and cause of the fire is unknown. The state fire marshal’s office was notified and was expected to respond to the scene this morning to investigate.

Sunset Cove Road is located off Harpswell Neck Road (Route 123). Howe didn’t release the owner’s name, but according to the town’s online assessing database, the 1950s-era cottage was owned by Timothy M. Libby Jr. of Saco.

Howe said the two- and- a- half-story building was undergoing renovations and is a total loss.
