Mere Point Property a Rare Opportunity

In Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s editions of the paper made reference to supporters of a public vote in June on the future 946 Mere Point Road as “asking for a public park that would provide access to shellfishermen on the parcel.” Yes, this could be one of the uses, but in my address to the Town Council on Monday evening, this what I stated: “A four-acre property on Maquoit Bay does not fall in the Town’s lap every day; especially one that could provide future access for a wide variety of activities such as swimming, kayaking, clam harvesting, and high school science class visits.” These are merely examples of the plethora of potential uses.

Brunswick’s coastline goes on for miles and miles, and yet, public access to the ocean is very limited. This is a rare opportunity to seize upon a gift for all our residents to use. Furthermore, the fact that we have collected a record 1,164 petition signatures for the ballot initiative in just over six weeks attests to its overwhelming support.
