It’s hard to believe it’s been one year since the disestablishment ceremony of NAS Brunswick. It certainly felt odd to me not marching down Maine Street on Memorial Day.
I have followed with great interest the progress of the base redevelopment since I departed. When the base closed on May 31, 2011, 33 percent of the land had been either transferred or was under a lease/license agreement. Today, fully 65 percent of the base has been approved for conveyance.
Last year, there were a handful of companies on the base; today there are 15 and counting. By all accounts the redevelop is proceeding as planned.
Brunswick Landing and the Topsham Commerce Park are succeeding first and foremost due to the hard work and dedication of the MRRA team led by Steve Levesque, by the support of the local, state and federal legislators, and because the Midcoast Maine region is a great place to work and live.
The original motto of NAS Brunswick was “Built for Business”; it is certainly a motto that fits well today.
Ann and I miss Brunswick and hope to return someday. Until then, we will follow the progress from afar with keen interest and a watchful eye.
