WEST BATH — No one was hurt after a taxi caught fire while traveling south on Route 1 in West Bath Wednesday afternoon.
The vehicle fire was reported at 1:19 p.m. Chief Deputy Brett Strout with the Sagadahoc County Sheriff ’s Department said Robert Lowe of Auburn, 52, was driving a taxi belonging to City Cab Co. out of Lewiston. Strout said he had dropped off a fare in Wiscasset and was driving back to Lewiston on Route 1 when the 2000 Ford Crown Victoria developed transmission issues and caught fire.
Strout said no one was hurt and the car was a total loss. The West Bath Fire Department responded.
Traffic wasn’t blocked but travel lanes were reduced, Strout said.
A vehicle passing the incident scene traveling too fast was pulled over by Cpl. Aaron Skolfield just beyond the scene and the driver was issued a warning. Strout said drivers are required by law to slow down at an accident scene, and this person didn’t. When that happens it puts other people in jeopardy, he said.
